7TH GRADE ENGLISH SYLLABUS

MISS ADAMS RM. 110

 

 

Course Description:

This English course is designed to survey written and spoken language and is designed to help students understand the different literary genres and their role in our everyday lives. We will do a variety of activities and assignments that will encourage students to think beyond the obvious in order to expand their interests in grammar and literature ranging from brainstorming and free writing to analytical research.

 

Course Expectations:

 

Students in this English class are expected to develop essential reading and writing skills, to keep up with reading assignments, and to begin the process of literary analysis critical to understanding and interpreting the effect literacy has on the past, present, and future.  Students are expected to come to class prepared and to complete assignments on time.

 

Textbooks and Materials:

Prentice Hall Literature: Language and Literacy Grade Seven

Prentice Hall Writing Coach Grade Seven

Textbooks will not be assigned to students.

 

Grading Plan:

My Grading Scale is based on five categories that will value at a certain percentage. All five categories together determine your total, or whole, grade in this class.

 

Grading Categories/Weights

                                    Notebook/Journals/Vocabulary =          20%

 

  • The weights of the categories may vary depending on activities done during the 6-week grading period.
  • Class performance grades are for things that are necessary for a successful class; for example, class participation for group activities, weekly participation grades for daily expectations, grades for necessary items such as signatures, etc.
  • Assignment Points vary depending on the type.
  • Grading Scale (as noted in the Parent/Student Handbook):

91-100%

81-90%

70-80%

F  0-69%

 

 

 

Course Policies:

Student Work: All students are expected to read class material, think critically and write effectively.  Students are expected to use complete sentences, proper grammar and correct spelling in every written performance.

 

Portfolio/Reader-Writer Notebook:  Student portfolios and RWN’s will stay in the classroom.  You will be expected to maintain a neatly organized portfolio and RWN for the duration of the class.  Your portfolio and RWN will be filled with items you have created and assignments that reflect your mastery of course objectives.   The teacher will give you regular guidance on how to construct and maintain your portfolio.

 

Group Activities:  You will be working in groups on a regular basis. Your group will be given cooperative learning activities to complete.  You will be expected to be an active member of your group and participation points will be assessed accordingly.  You will always be graded as an individual; however your group may earn points together that will lead to a reward.

 

Extra Credit: Opportunities for extra credit will be offered from time to time.  Extra credit is extra work above and beyond the usual class assignments/homework, not work used to cover up missing work.

 

Absences: If a student is absent, it is HIS/HER responsibility to get all late work from the teacher and return it in a timely manner.

 

Classroom Expectations:

  • Respect other’s personal space and belongings.
  • Respect each class member’s right to learn and the teacher’s right to teach.
  • Listen to what others are saying. Class discussion is an important part of this class. Do not ridicule or criticize another class member.
  • Offensive language and hatefulness is not acceptable in this class. 
  • Students are expected to be in their seats and prepared for class when the bell rings. Being prepared for class means having all materials, portfolios/RWN, books, pens, etc. out and ready.
  • Students will stay in their seats at all times unless otherwise directed by the teacher.
  • If you want to be recognized or have a question, raise your hand and I will call on you.

 

Class Materials:

All students will need the following:

Notebook or Composition Book (college rule)

No. 2 Pencils and Black or Blue Pen

Highlighter(s)

Portfolio folder

Notebook Paper (college ruled)

 

Discipline Procedures:

 

  • 1st Offense – Verbal Warning

 

  • 2nd Offense – Written Warning and Lunch Consultation

 

  • 3rd Offense – Lunch Consultation and Call/Email to Parent/Guardian(s)

 

  • 4th Offense – Office Referral and Call/Email to Parent/Guardian(s)

 

  • 5th Offense – Office Referral, Call/Email to Parent/Guardian(s); A conference will be setup with the teacher, student, parent/guardian, and an Administrator to discuss further consequences if needed.

 

 

Severe disruptions (fights, excessive and offensive arguments, bullying) will result in the student being IMMEDIATELY removed from the class and sent to the Principal’s office.

 

Statement for Academic Dishonesty:

Academic honesty is expected in this class.  Cheating will not be tolerated. Consequences may include:  reduction in grade on assignment, repeat assignment, no grade on assignment or others as deemed appropriate.  Academic dishonesty will be reported to a school counselor and a parent will be notified.
